The Two Faces of January
The Two Faces of January (1964) is a thrill ride novel by Patricia Highsmith. Its title implies the two appearances of the Roman god Janus, after whom the period of January was named. Biographer Andrew Wilson, in his 2003 distribution Beautiful Shadow: A Life of Patricia Highsmith claims the title is 'suitable for the janus-confronted, transition like nature of her protagonists'.[1]

Chester MacFarland is a drunkard swindler going in Greece with his young spouse, Colette. McFarland is needed by the police back in the U.S. for running a Ponzi conspire. In Athens, a Greek policeman questions McFarland, who unintentionally slaughters him amid a battle in his lodging room. A current colleague, a youthful American law graduate and writer named Rydal Keener, chooses to help them, to a limited extent in light of the fact that McFarland helps him to remember his as of late expired father, from whom he was alienated. He enables McFarland and Colette to conceal the body and leave Athens under false identifications acquired by his companion Niko, a nearby road merchant.
The trio take a flight to Crete and introduce themselves in a lodging under accepted names. Colette plays with a stricken Keener before McFarland, whose desire in the long run shows signs of improvement of him. On a blustery morning, while they visit the royal residence of Knossos, MacFarland tries to slaughter Keener by tossing a pithos at him from above, however coincidentally murders Colette. Both MacFarland and Keener independently escape the scene undetected and take a similar pontoon back to Athens, now more subject to each other than any time in recent memory.
Back in Athens, MacFarland is met by the police, and expresses that Keener killed Colette. In the meantime, he employs an agreement executioner to dispose of Keener for the last time. He is unconscious that the "hired gunman", whom he pays ahead of time, is in reality a flower specialist whom Keener paid to set him up. Quicker seeks refuge from the police, while MacFarland acquires another false identification and books a flight to Paris.
